What exactly is a residential HVAC system?
The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit in a home plays a vital role in maintaining a comfortable temperature year-round, alongside constantly circulating fresh air. Despite the variety of HVAC systems available, all operate based on a similar principle: they intake fresh air which is then heated or cooled to the desired temperature using a mechanical ventilation system. They are also capable of managing humidity levels and enhancing air quality through air cleaners designed to seize bacteria, spores, and particles of virus size. A HVAC technician can provide valuable advice on the most suitable system and options to meet your specific home requirements.
We offer a variety of air conditioning services
- Refrigerant leak repairs: With time, the refrigerant lines in your AC might develop leaks, resulting in decreased system performance and efficiency. Our skilled technicians can identify and fix these leaks, afterwards refilling the refrigerant to the necessary level.
- Condenser coil cleaning: The condenser coil, which is situated in the outside unit, can accumulate dirt or get obstructed, affecting the system’s performance. Routine cleanings can help maintain a smooth operation of your AC.
- Compressor replacement: The AC’s compressor is the heart of the system. If it fails, it may need to be replaced.
- Thermostat issues: If your AC is not cooling adequately the problem could be as simple as a malfunctioning thermostat. We can diagnose and resolve thermostat issues.

When should I call a professional?
Some common signs that your HVAC system is in need of repair include:
- Increase in energy bills: If you notice a sudden rise in your energy bills without a corresponding increase in usage, it could indicate that your HVAC system is exerting more effort than necessary, often pointing to a potential problem.
- Not enough cool air or hot air: Is your AC running but not cooling the room? Or is your heater running but not warming the room? This could indicate a problem with your HVAC system.
- Strange noises: A healthy HVAC unit should be relatively quietly. If you’ve started to notice grinding, grating, or squealing sounds, it’s time to call Excel Mechanical Solutions.
- Unpleasant odors: If you get an unpleasant odor from your vents, there could be an issue with the HVAC’s wire insulation, or you could even have mold or meldew inside your unit or ductwork.
- Water leaks: Leaking water or refrigerant around your HVAC system is not something to ignore, as this could damage your home, and could be a significant problem with your HVAC unit. Water stains on the ceiling could also indicate an issue with your AC components in your attic.
Resolving HVAC problems swiftly can prevent substantial system damage and avoid unnecessary temperatures inside of the home. When unsure, reach out to the experienced HVAC technicians at Excel Mechanical Solutions for diagnosing and resolving your HVAC issues in a responsible and timely manner.
FAQs
Residential HVAC Repairs around metro Atlanta area
How much does a service call cost?
A service call for residential HVAC issues costs $89 + any repairs needed. Issues will be diagnosed during your HVAC service call. Price for repair will be given after diagnostics are performed.
How much is a maintenance contract?
We offer annual maintenance contracts for residential HVAC units. These contracts include two visits a year, tune-ups, drain clearances, and air filter changes, all for just $189/year. Additionally, this contract includes a 10% discount on parts and service calls.
How long will it take before my air conditioning or heater is fixed?
Usually we can fix residential air conditioning and heater issues within one day from the time you call us.
How can I cool a hot room above my garage, or heat a cold room?
If a room is far away from the HVAC system, the effectiveness of the cooling or heating can be diminished over long stretches of ducts. For these types of rooms, or spaces, we recommend a ductless mini-split. Ductless mini-splits systems are fairly efficient and use fewer resources to keep rooms cool in the summer and/or warm in the winter.
Why is my air conditioner not cooling properly?
Your AC system’s condensers are usually outside housed in large metal boxes. Inside, you’ll find components like refrigerant, a compressor, and a fan. If your home isn’t cooling properly, it could be a condenser issue. Check for leaks or unusual noises, and call Excel Mechanical Solutions.
Common condenser issues include refrigerant leaks, broken capacitors, and motor failures, among others.
Often, the first thing we check is the electrical supply. If your condenser is being supplied with the correct amperage, we use an electronic leak detector to find out if your refrigerant is leaking and locate the leak. Because refrigerant goes between a gas and a liquid state, refrigerant leaks aren’t always noticeable. If we do find a leak, we can replace the pipe or coil that’s leaking and recharge your system.
You can schedule an appointment to diagnose issues with your current air conditioner by visiting our contact page.
Why is my air conditioner leaking water?
Your AC system has an evaporator coil in the attic that can drop to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, condensing warm air and creating moisture. A drain pan beneath this coil collects the condensation, which goes through an insulated ¾ inch PVC pipe to a drain line under a sink in your home. This is your condensate drain line.
Water stains on your ceiling may indicate leaking horizontal pipes or a clogged or sweating condensate drain line. Call Excel Mechanical Solutions to diagnose the problem. If it’s a leaking pipe, we repipe the necessary pipes. If the issue is a sweating or blocked drain line, our AC technicians can solve the problem with a condensate drain line repair.
Over time, rust or algae can clog the condensate drain line, potentially causing the drain pan to overflow. However there is an emergency condensate drain line, usually located under your roof soffits usually above a window. If this pipe is leaking, contact us to unclog your condensate drain line and empty your drain pan.
Ceiling stains may stem from an overflowing drain pan or damaged insulation around the condensate drain line, possibly caused by rodents, leading to sweating. Our technician will inspect your AC system components including the evaporator coil, drain pan, and drain lines to determine the cause.
If we find a clogged drain line, we’ll clear it and check the water for algae or rust. If rust is found, we will recommend replacing the evaporator coil to avoid the same blockage. For algae, we empty and clear the drain pan, the condensate drain line, and the emergency condensate drain line.
If inadequate insulation is causing sweating, we will check for rodent damage, as insulation can degrade over time or be gnawed by rodents. Our technicians can replace damaged insulation and recommend pest control if necessary.

Why are air conditioning and heater tune-ups important?
A tune-up is a maintenance visit from a professional HVAC technician from Excel Mechanical Solutions designed to prepare your system for seasonal changes. It is essential to schedule an AC tune-up in the spring and a heating tune-up for your furnace in the fall, before temperatures change. During the tune-up, the technician will perform necessary repairs and verify that your air conditioning or heating systems are functioning properly, ready to handle the demands of summer or winter. A tune-up ensures your HVAC is operating efficiently.
Regular air conditioning and heating tune-ups not only promote efficient operation but can also extend the lifespan of your system. By committing to two maintenance visits each year, you can ensure your air conditioner and furnace perform at their peak throughout the year, which is crucial since your furnace blower operates year-round to circulate air in your home. Moreover, the technician can identify and address potential issues before they escalate into significant problems.
Maintaining your system not only helps you avoid expensive air conditioning and heater repairs but also ensures that your energy bills remain as low as possible. By taking care of your equipment, you can extend its lifespan and keep it operating at peak efficiency throughout its service life.

What is the life expectancy of my existing heater?
Where most heating systems typically last between fifteen and twenty years, it’s important to note that the various components within these systems have different life spans, with some parts deteriorating faster than others. For example, blower motors generally last around seven years, while capacitor battery components usually have an expected lifespan of only three years, influenced by how often and for how long the heater is operated. If you’re encountering issues with your central heating system, reach out to Excel Mechanical Solutions for assistance.
